We're planning an "outing" to photograph Fall foliage on Sunday, 21 September 2008. (An "outing" is an informal excursion and great opportunity to meet other photographers in our area, make new friends, and share photography tips. It's not a "workshop" or "photo tour," so there are no fees, and no formal instruction. However, we always enjoy talking about our photography passion, so if you have questions or would like photography tips during the outing, please don't hesitate to ask.)
The "outing" will consist primarily of a drive up scenic Old Stage Road and Gold Camp Road to Victor and Cripple Creek (and return). It's always hard to guess the timing of the "peak" fall color; however a scouting report from this last weekend indicated that the aspen were starting to change and would probably be "near peak color" by the weekend of the 21st.
We will meet at the north end of the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo parking lot at 8:00 AM, and carpool from there. We will be travelling on rough dirt roads, so a four-wheel drive vehicle with adequate suspension would be best. Rebecca and I have room for two passengers in our vehicle, so two people are welcome to ride with us. It looks like the weather is going to cooperate, with a forecast for "mostly cloudy" (good for intimate landscapes of Aspen) and only a 10% chance of rain in the afternoon. Please anticipate cool (60 degrees) fall weather in Cripple Creek and bring a light jacket or windbreaker.
We'll be stopping along the way to photograph the aspen (obviously) and so anticipate arriving at Victor and Cripple Creek in time for lunch. (We're looking for a good recommended lunch stop in either of those towns.)
We're anticipating fewer stops on the way back down, and estimate a mid-afternoon arrival back at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo parking lot.
