Camera Raw

Advanced Tab

If you have the “advanced” option selected at the top of the Camera Raw window, then you can select two other tabs.  The lens tab provides adjustments for correcting chromatic aberration and lens vignetting.  Moving the vignetting slider to the right will correct for any darkened edges/corners in your image caused by lens vignetting, while moving the slider to the left can be used to add vignetting effects to the image.  We will save discussion of the chromatic aberration sliders for a future lesson.  The calibrate tab provides adjustments for calibrating the colors in camera raw to your specific image sensor.  We will save our discussion of this feature until a more advanced lesson on Camera Raw.

We are now ready to save the changes we have made to the raw file interpretation.  It is important to note that we’re not making any changes to the raw file, we’re just changing the “preferences” on how Camera Raw will process this file when it is opened.  The “preferences” are saved in a “sidecar” XMP file that your computer associates with the raw file, or in a Camera Raw database that is used for the same purpose.  (You select which method to use when you first begin using Camera Raw.)  If you look in the folder on your computer where you are storing your images, you will see an additional file with the same name as your image and an XMP file extension.  This XMP file is where all of the Camera Raw preferences are saved for this image.  If you move the raw file to another folder on your computer, be sure to move the XMP file as well, so Photoshop can find these “preferences” next time you open the raw file.

To open the image in Photoshop, and save the changes you have made to the Camera Raw preferences for this file, mouse click on the OK button in the upper right of the Camera Raw window.  To save the “preferences” for this RAW file without opening the file, hold down the Alt key, which causes the OK button in the upper right of the Camera Raw window to change to Update, and mouse click on the Update button.
