What a fun effect! Of your two shots, I like this one best - I think it is the color blend that captures it for me on this shot. You do beautiful work!

Will you share how you set this shot up with us?

Thanks Rebecca. I had fun taking this shot. I used purple xmas lights in the background, app. 10-12 feet away placed on my counter table. The subject was in the middle maybe 4ft away from the camera, propped up on a chair. Using a tripod and remote shutter control, I zoomed it and focused on the subject and the background lights appeared like that. I wanted the bokeh to appear bigger but my subject gets too blurry, so this is the nearest I could get to the subject w/o blurring it. The room was also dimmed. I also tried covering the lens with a black cardboard with heart-shaped cut-out in the middle, and it yielded a heart shaped purple bokeh. It was so cool, you could actually see it in the viewfinder. I didn't submit that one for the assignment. All thanks to you and Keith, you guys are great mentor.
