I use it at our camera club for the membership showings, since it's lightweight and very fast.  It's also great for conversions between different formats.  If you install the plugin package you can preview RAW files easily. It can do all the normal resizing, and cropping stuff.  It supports use of some Adobe Photoshop filters, though that's a little tricky to set up.  But configure it to use the free "Virtual Photographer" filter (available on the Internet) and it's a quick tool for exploring different treatments.  It can be used to create thumbnail (contact) sheets, automated slideshows, screensavers.  I also use it as a front end for scanning. It does much more, but that's the bread and butter stuff I use. Mine is set so I can quickly export images directly to Adobe Photoshop for more sophisticated needs. There are loads of freebie viewer/editors out there, but IrfanView is the one that I always come back to for my own use.

The "create panorama" feature is good for joining images for something like a triptych, but for stiching and blending a range of images for a real panorama I'd use something more advanced. I use 'Panorama Factory" for that.

Thanks!  It sounds like it has much of the functionality of Photo Mechanic, which is one of my "bread and butter" programs for previewing, culling, and basic image editing of raw files, and producing slideshows, etc., but IrfanView is a lot more affordable!

For those of you that might be having trouble combining your three images into a triptych so that you can post them in the gallery, here's an option.

Upload your three images into the gallery, in the (smaller) size that you will use when combining them into the triptych.  For example, to keep the overall combined image dimension under 1000 pixels wide, you would size each image to be 333 pixels on the horizontal dimension.  Once you have your images uploaded, then copy the URL/image link at the bottom of the image display in the gallery.  It looks something like this:

[img http:// etc./img] (except with the full string).

Then paste that URL into a reply to this thread.  Do that for all three images, one per line in your forum post.  Once you have the image URLs pasted, then highlight one of one of the URLs and click on the "insert table column" icon above the line of smileys that you see when you are posting the reply.   (The icon with the one blue square is the "insert table column" icon.)  Do that for each URL.  This will insert the "table column" code before and after the URL you have highlighted, and once you save the post (click on the "post" button) the images will be displayed in separate columns in a single table.

The results aren't real elegant, but at least we will be able to see your trio of images posted side by side.

Does this help?

Keith

Hi Marilyn,

What an amazing and fascinating building!  Can you tell us more about it?

You did a wonderful job joining the two images on the left of the triptych.  I like how the curve in the bottom right of the left image continues right on across into the curve of the center image.   Very well done.

Keith

P.S.
Thank you very much for persevering with this assignment, and for sharing your wonderful images of that amazing building.

Thanks, Keith.  I really liked the way the curves came together in the too images too.  Thanks for suggesting working with the table function in Word because that allowed me to play around with these and other images.  I had about 8 different variations and I think this won out because of the curves.  It is an amazing building.  Here's a brief blurb from Wikipedia where you can also see posts of other images, including ones of construction phases.  I always like people to know there is more to Vegas than casinos!

The Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health (LRCBH), officially the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health, opened on July 13, 2009 in Las Vegas, Nevada that is operated by the Cleveland Clinic [1] and was designed by world-renowned architect, Frank Gehry of Gehry Partners in Santa Monica, California.

Keep Memory Alive (also known as KMA) was founded by Larry Ruvo, senior managing partner of Southern Wines and Spirits, in memory of his father, Lou Ruvo, a victim of Alzheimer’s Disease, together with his wife Camille, Mirage Resorts CEO Bobby Baldwin, who also lost his father to Alzheimer's Disease, and Bobby Baldwin's wife Donna. KMA supports the mission of the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health and has held several star-studded galas, attended by celebrities and notables from around the world. It has become one of Las Vegas’ most important charity initiatives and a key participant in the nation fight against Alzheimer’s disease.

I hope this works...I'm trying to post a photo of the larger context for both the reflections image and the Brain Center triptych.

Fascinating.  Yes, it is good to know that Vegas has something else going for it other than casinos.  :)

This is a great assignment. I see so many great contributions on this site.
I put larger version of the "Ways of Light" comp online at
http://www.prairiepathways.com/way_of_light.html.
The textural details show up better large.

Here's a step-through I put together for Marilyn on using the SplashUp online photo editing application to create a triptych. It might be useful to others as well. The interface takes a bit of getting used to, but it is a pretty fine piece of work and um... it works.

Hi Luc,

Here's a link to the information Dave posted that described how to use the online photo editing application called SplashUp to create a triptych.
