The assignment for the week of 13 - 19 April 2009 is "Eyes" It is often said that "eyes are the window to the soul." It is no coincidence that the cover photo for National Geographic's special edition "100 Best Pictures" is the striking image of the Afghan girl with the riveting green eyes that appeared on the cover of National Geographic in June of 1985. This photo established the career of photographer Steve McCurry, who describes his photography with the words "I look for the unguarded moment, the essential soul peeking out." Your assignment for this week is to capture an image in which the eyes of the subject convey a sense of who they are, and establish an emotional connection with the viewer. Although we often say "smile" when taking portrait images, we could probably create much more powerful images if we were to say "show me your eyes" instead. Being able to capture an image of "the essential soul peeking out" is a skill that will raise your portraiture from average to extraordinary.
