The assignment for the week of 23 – 29 March 2009 is “Still Life.”  Wikipedia defines still life as “a work of art depicting mostly inanimate subject matter, typically commonplace objects which may be either natural (food, flowers, plants, rocks, or shells) or man-made (drinking glasses, books, vases, jewelry, coins, pipes, and so on) in an artificial setting.”

Still life photography is an excellent means of exploring and learning the craft of photography.  Good still life photographs are created using form and color to compose a pleasing image, in conjunction with controlled lighting to bring out the form and dimensionality of the objects being photographed.

You might want to review the “soft light” assignment for useful tips on using soft light to enhance the perception of dimension and set the tone or mood for your chosen subject

The link to this Shutterbug article provides some basic tips for composing still life images.

One of the best ways to learn is byexamining images that you find pleasing in order to understand how the photographer used form, color, light, and composition to create the image.   Two links to inspirational galleries of still life images are here at photoforum.ru and Photo.net

Please upload your images to the “still life” gallery no later than midnight Mountain Time (GMT -07:00) on Sunday, 29 March 2009.  I’ll look forward to seeing your images!
