"Art," Weekly Assignment for 10 - 16 November 2008
« on: November 10, 2008, 05:07:46 PM »
The assignment for the week of 10 – 16 November is “art.”  Art is defined by Encarta dictionary as:  1)  “The creation of beautiful or thought-provoking works, e.g. in painting, music, or writing;”   2)  “Beautiful or thought-provoking works produced through creative activity;” or 3)  “Activities enjoyed for the beauty they create or the way they present ideas, e.g. painting, music and literature."  This is obviously a very simple definition of a complex subject.  For a more thorough discussion of the subject, you can reference this link:  http://encarta.msn.com/encyclopedia_761556523/Art.html#s11   Only by understanding art in the context of history can we begin to understand why we call certain objects “art.”

So what is the benefit of exploring “art” as a subject in our images?  I’m assigning “art” as a topic because as you are composing your images of art, I want you to consciously think about what makes that subject “art” while very similar objects or activities are not commonly considered “art.”  Understanding what makes an object "art" will help you compose images that may also be considered "art."

Images will be evaluated based on how well they present the subject.  Subject placement, lighting and color should all be used to complement and reinforce the “feel” of the art object (or activity).  Better yet, submit an image that could be considered “art” in and of itself, such as Joyce’s Wet Grass image, Tom's (Kermit's) Bench and Ristra image or many of the other simple but evocative images in the gallery.

Bench and Ristra

Images should be submitted in the "Art" album in the Weekly Assignments category of the gallery no later than midnight Mountain Time (GMT - 07:00) on Sunday, 16 November 2008.
