Title: "Photo Essay," Multi-Week Photography Assignment for July 2011 - 7 August 2011
Post by: keithsnell on July 02, 2011, 06:32:51 PM
NOTE:  I've extended this assignment until Sunday, 7 August 2011.

First, I have to thank Marilyn for helping me think of another good assignment topic. I've wondered in the past how we might do an assignment that required multiple images to "tell a story." Marilyn's request for advice on how to produce a photo essay was a good catalyst to get me thinking about how we might try something like that for our assignments.

This is a bit of an experiment, but I'd like to try an assignment that entails using a series of images to "tell a story."  Let's call it a "photo essay."  :)  I think the easiest way to do this is to embed your images into a forum post "reply" to this topic.  To embed your images, simply upload your images into the "Photo Essay" album in the gallery, copy the link at the bottom of the "file information" displayed under your image (the one that says "Copy & Paste link to display in forum) and then "paste" this link into your forum post.  This will embed the image at the appropriate point in your text when you post the forum reply.  Just let me know if you run into problems and I will try to help you through the process.  You can use as much (or as little) text as you need to in order to tell the story.  Please try to keep your images to a reasonable number. (Somewhere between 5 and 10?)

Another option would be to post a link to a "photo essay" or slideshow/presentation that you have posted on another website.

So what is the usefulness of doing an assignment like this?  Because it puts you in a different frame of mind, and prompts you to think about those "supporting" images that you will need to effectively tell your story.  I often find that when I try to put together a "photo story" after a trip, I invariably think "darn, I should have taken an image of (fill in the blank) in order to show (fill in the blank).  If you aren't thinking "story" throughout your outing, then you will surely miss those simple images that you need to "fill in the blanks."  (For example, maybe one of your supporting images is the boring picture of the sign at the entrance to the place your story is about.)  It's nice to be able to create images that stand on their own, but the reality is that most images are part of a larger story, which can often be told more effectively with the inclusion of other supporting images.  (Hmmm, wedding photography is a bit like that isn't it, since you are in effect telling the story of the couple's special day.)

Since this entails a bit more work than our normal weekly assignments, I've made this a multi-week assignment.  Please submit your photo essay (as reply to this post) no-later-than midnight Mountain time (GMT -07:00) on Sunday, 31 July 7 August 2011.  I'm definitely looking forward to seeing your stories.

This sounds very interesting.  I have to think about this a little longer.  I think this is a cool idea.

Evan was bragging about eating ants.  Keith called his bluff and he ate the first ant himself.  We prepared the Ant-n-M and gave it to Evan.  We thought he was going to back out but he showed his true courage and ate the live ant.  Unfortuantely, I wans't fast enough to capture his picture while eating it.  Evan was quite proud of himself and actually, we were pretty proud of him too!

After the ants were eaten, Keith said he felt his ant crawling around in his stomach ( :D).  We asked Evan if he felt the same thing and after a pained look on Evan's face, he laughed and said no.

Sue, awesome shot of the ant on the m&m!  I'll have to show Evan when he wakes in the morning.  I'm going to have to watch him and his Dad on these 'challenges!'.  Sure had a fun weekend with all of you!

Here's a work-in-progress:
http://www.prairiepathways.com/galleries/travois.html
I want to keep it pretty simple. Shown are some tools made from natural objects, gourds, bones and antlers, and steps in the construction of a travois.
There is a full-screen icon at the bottom right of the slideshow window if you mouse-over the image.

Thanks!  This was done especially for photography.  Much of it was done with rulers in the photos for documentary purposes, but others were done for my own use. I had a 'mishap' early in the shoot which put my favorite lens and flash out of commission. I had to finish it out switching between a 50mm and ultrawide, and  no fill-flash. We started early in the morning but the light quickly became very contrasty.  A reflector panel was used once in awhile, but that wasn't practical when things started moving. Anyway, I hope the sequence makes sense.  I tried to keep the content a little mysterious, with following frames giving context to earlier ones. At the end are some studies of primitive tools made from natural objects. They don't really fit in the story-flow, but they're interesting so I put'em in anyway.

Hi Shee,

Thank you for asking.  Currently these types (and sizes) of files are allowed to be uploaded in the Forum and Gallery respectively:

Forum:  doc, gif, jpg, mpg, pdf, png, txt, zip     Size:   up to 7 meg

Gallery:  doc/txt/rtf/pdf/xls/pps/ppt/zip/gz/mdb/nef     Size:  up to 6 meg

Displaying a movie file (or flash based video) is best done by linking to the youtube or vimeo page where the video has been uploaded.

Unfortunately allowing site visitors to embed video or flash in the forums (instead of just linking to it) presents a pretty big security risk since it requires that I allow visitors to embed code and links.  There are lots of nasties (mostly automated bots) out there that would take advantage of that to embed malicious code.  It's always a struggle to keep the site safe, so I'm hesitant to open up any known security risks.  That said, if you (or anyone else) wants to embed a video link in a forum post, just let me know and I can embed the appropriate code as admin.  But again, the easiest way is to upload the video to Youtube or Vimeo or some other video hosting site and then just provide a link.

Hopefully this helps?  If there are any other types of documents that you think I should be allowing, just let me know and I'll check into the possibility of doing that.

Drilling a well has really been a experience and we have learned alot including how to be a "Water Witcher"

Water Witching also known as Dowsing is how they find where to drill for water. You would think there would be a more scientific way to find water. The witching did not work the first time so we had to drill a second well.

The drilling trucks
One truck has the drilling rig and the other holds the water and extra pipe.

Drilling the well
It took about 2 days to drill the well to 400 feet and put the casing in. This photo shows the water and sand blowing out the pipe while they are drilling.

Hit Water!
Fineally hit water about 70 feet down. They ended up drilling down to 400 feet.

Ditch for the new water line
They had to dig a 550 foot ditch to put the water line and power line in to connect to the home.

Great photo essay Rick.  My favorite images are the water witching and "the ditch."

Have you made any progress on the well?  Are they going to drill again?

The second well that was drilled seems to be working just fine. I am told by the inlaws (who are staying there again) that the water is flowing and clean. So it sounds like the well will be a good one.  :D

Yup, this is the right place.  You didn't do anything wrong, your post just went to page 2 on the thread.  (You can hit the link to page 1 at the bottom of the thread to get back to the first page.)

Hi all ~ I've been playing with a lot of ideas  and ways of displaying a story for this assignment.  These photos have literally been moved from Canon DPP, to Aperture3 to Picasa.  I guess what I can say at this point is  that I've learned a lot in this process.  I also had a great day with Ashlynn and in the end, that's what counts most!

So hopefully this link will take you to a Picasa slide show.  Click on "slideshow" at the top left.  Once it starts you can click on the +  next to "seconds" at the bottom of the screen to make sure you have enough time to read the story.

Fun photo essay Marilyn.  I like how you mentioned that there was a blue cover, as that helps explain the blue cast to some of the photos.  (Since we know  they're taken under a blue cover, now the color seems OK.)  Glad you had a fun day!  You captured some great expressions.

I really worked to try to eliminate the blue cast on Aperture3 but they didn't translate to Picasa very well. (I figured I better mention the blue cover!)  Should I also upload the photos into the gallery or is this link ok?

I just uploaded my 11 pictures for the photo essay. I did not manage to do it as nicely as Rick. They all went as individual photos into the gallery. The texts which tell the story are numbered. The introductory phrase needs to be added:
We spent our holidays in the North of France, in the Champagne area. Herein lies a knight's tale:

1)Comte de Champagne (1201-1253) and king of  Navarre, known as Thibaud le Posthume is the most renouned of the counts of  Champagne.
2) He represents the archetype of the mediaeval lord: valiant chevalier and gentleman poet.
3)He contributed to the art of poetry and song at the court of Louis IX, leaving to posterity a remarkable variety and quality of poetic work.
4) He participated in the sixth crusade, leaving behind him his fortified town of Provins (this here is actually Sedan)
5) and well built castle
6) When he returned in 1239 he brought back with him the Damascene rose (still cultivated today) and a vine called 'Chardonnay' without which there would be no champagne.
7) The Benedictine monks of Saint Nicaise in Reims dug out the cellars below the abbey in XIII century (first used as a quarry by the Romans and as a shelter for persecuted Christians in IV century) in which to store the wine they developed from the Chardonnay grapes. To reach the lower levels the visitor descends first to 12 metres below ground (constant temperature 12°C) and to reach the quarry area to 20 metres (constant temperature 10°C).
8)10 millions bottles (ranging from 5dl to 15 litres in size!)
9) are stored in 4 km of passage ways
10) After the stiff climb back up, the opportunity to taste the precious drink
11) is not likely to be refused. The remaining question: to buy or not to buy?!

thanks, Keith, that would be great! I also forgot to give the overall title which is
Structures and patterns - Champagne region in France.

AND: I learned 3 important lessons during this holiday:
1. Never go on an holiday - and especially not when you intend to visit and photograph the interior of buildings - without your tripod.
2. Do not use the automatic sport mode if you want to capture dynamic movement (I did this during a jousting tournament - the photos are sharp, but the sense of movement is lost. Quite static and boring...
3. Remember to remove sunshade from lens before using flash.
ALL very basic really  :)

Luc,

So neat to see the 'riddler' racks of champagne lining those passage ways - when I toured another winery in R, they told us they periodically 'turn' the champagne in those racks to keep it from settling to one side of the bottle or something like that.  I loved those racks and my brother and I found some at an antique store in France and brought some back here to store our wine!  Beautiful story and very artistic pictures- thanks for sharing.  Wish we could have been with you - I love touring wineries with so much history -- one day, we'll get back across the pond to visit your area!

Pratt County Fair - Girl and Steed against the Heat

The kids and I were very excited to finally get to see my niece, Tori, compete in what they call the 'horse games' at the Pratt County Fair.  It is a 4-H event where you compete in barrels, flags, poles, and keyhole.  We arrived in time to see Tori compete in poles and keyhole.  All the 4-H'ers and horses did an amazing job given it was about 104 degrees that afternoon.  Thankfully, they had a nice shady area to wait in and shaded areas for the spectators to watch from!  With a bit of a breeze, it really was not that bad.

I first must say a big thanks to Uncle Tom for providing great entertainment for McKenzie as she was not as captivated by the events as Evan and Grandma (below).

Tori's turn finally came up for poles - a slalom type event where the rider weaves the horse through poles, turns it and weaves back through then to turn and race for the finish line.

Tori was looking great, but then she clipped one pole, you could see the disappointment in her face.

With determination, Tori completed the poles event with a good time - unfortunately, the penalty for knocking the pole added to her time.

Tori and Rebel charged toward the finish line after completing the poles.

The highlight of the day for Evan was getting to ride with Tori in the competitors' area between events.

But, then it was back to work for Tori and Rebel.

Tori and Rebel race off toward the start line for the keyhole event

Threading your horse through a keyhole is no easy task in this heat.

Tori got the horse to do a 180 pretty fast and headed back through the keyhole.

Tori and Rebel race for the finish line in the keyhole event.
With the keyhole event completed, it was finally time to relax and McKenzie's turn to ride Rebel.

After some coaxing, Tori convinced Mac to ride with her -- Mac loved it.

Nice relaxing ride after a hard, hot day.

Thanks Keith,  Im having trouble embedding/uploading the slideshow in my blog, and I really don't want to make another format for that, so let me find ways how to upload it and then provide the link, i didn't like the you tube upload coz of the degraded quality , it was hard to read the text part,  hmm i might have to re-do it so I can share it here. wish me luck , we have until tomorrow to upload  :)

Thank you Marilyn and Rebecca for your comments. Yes, Rebecca, they periodically turn the bottles and change the angle so that the sediment goes to the neck. They then freeze the neck of the bottle, open the cap and the sediment shoots our with the pressure that it built up and then cork and cap. This has to happen within a few seconds, otherwise they lose too much fizz (a layman's explanation!). All this is done by hand. This explains (partially) the price of good champagne.
For the record: It was my wife who put the story together  :) real teamwork!

School starts in Omaha next week.  When the schools start the public pools close.  The cool thing that happens here is that on the last day at some of the pools the last two hours dogs are allowed to swim.  We have a two year old yellow lab that weighs 95 pounds.  Well everyone knows that labs love water so we figured this would be great fun for him.  We decided to take him.  There was some discussion about how busy the pool would be.  My wife said busy.  My two sons and I thought it would not be bad.  This pool had a parking lot and we still had to park three blocks away and walk to it.

There were all kinds of dogs there.  Even a few pit bulls.  Leroy, that is my dog’s name, was interested.  He walked up to the edge and stepped out into the water.  I think he thought it was shallow.  The lowest point in this pool was four feet deep so he went in over his head.  He wasn’t expecting that.  It dampened his enthusiasm immediately.

It appeared to me that maybe two thirds of the dogs lacked enthusiasm.  Owners tried all kinds of approaches to coax their dog into swimming.

I am sure that this lady was reminding her Newfoundland of his water loving heritage and how his ancestors saved many people from watery graves.

And I am sure that this young boy was explaining to his dog that since he was wearing a life jacket he was safe and he had nothing to worry about.

I heard this man talking.  He was reasoning with his German Shepherd.  Talking to the dog like they were equals.  The dog didn’t believe a word that he was saying.

Some people did meet with success.  I think this Rottweiler would have walked across hot coals to get his ball.  Favorite toys seemed to work for a number of people.

Some dogs truly disliked the water.  Some showed great resourcefulness.  Like this fellow.  She might have had him in five feet of water in the middle of the pool but that didn’t mean he had to be in the water.

This is hysterical!!  Great capture of dogs and their human companions for this event!

All of the photo essays were so much fun to read and view.  I couldn't always figure out how to comment if I missed commenting before a new one went up.... This is going to be interesting to see how you set it up for voting, Keith!  :)

Excellent narration and photos on the dog and pool story!  Love what you said the owners were discussing with their dogs and I think you nailed it what the dogs were thinking back!  Just love how the picture of Leroy coming out of the pool caught the words "no pushing' on the pool deck --I'm sure that is what Leroy was thinking as well!  And, perfect ending shot -- that was just classic!

it's MY rabbit!
First of all, we love bunnies. Well, the cats do too - just not in the same way. Zorro showed up at our front door with plans to bring the trophy inside. When the reception wasn't all he hoped for he moved back into the yard, protecting his catch from a very interested rival.

Ribot - I just loved the pictures of all the dogs!  I think this is my favorite by far.  Great captions.  I think the last picture says it all.  What we don't do for our pets.

I am a sucker for dogs and I loved both the photographs and the commentary.  My 3 dogs would not swim if I paid them.
