Title: Western New South Wales via the "Road Less Travelled". 2.Mudgee
Post by: rod1 on May 29, 2008, 04:14:09 PM
Mudgee is a town in central New South Wales, Australia. It is located in the broad fertile Cudgegong River valley 261 kilometres north west of Sydney. Population 24,000 at the 2001 census. For Dylan, it was a Motel and food...plus T.V. and a skate park.

For Lida and I, Mudgee was a town we had visited before and always wanted to spend more time at. This was our chance and we took it. Commencing at the park in the center of town we wandered along the Cudgegong River. Truly beautiful. Regina, a professional artist from Victoria was set up and caught my eye immediately.

In 1851, the population of Mudgee was 200. However, the population exploded as the discovery of gold in nearby Hargraves by Edward Hargraves led to a gold rush in New South Wales. Mudgee has developed as a wine producing region and is a popular destination for people to visit the forty wineries operating in the Mudgee district. Other rural produce includes cattle, sheep, wheat, lucerne, olives, fruit, tomatoes, corn, honey and dairy products. The town itself has wonderful catholic and Anglican churches and I remembered performing as a musician in this beautiful Catholic church only a few years ago.

The Carrilion in the town brought back memories of playing with a Brass Band here and doing a Left Wheel around this corner almost 50 years ago!

Almost next door, the 'Husbands Saddlery' seemed to stand out.

Wine!!! 40 wineries. I knew it was going to be a 'rough' trip! And, we 'had' to taste as we went. I photographed the first, then kept tasting. Seemed the best way to enjoy the afternoon!

It was really, very beautiful,

and, Dylan, of course, kept on being a 12 year old!

Outside, in the carpark, I was able to 'pick up' some of the vines and, those surrounding the area.

Always, its the Vines, in the background.

In any town, small things stand out and before leaving Mudgee I stopped and photographed this unusual little house. Everything has been recycled and it's worth pausing and reading the sincere sign the owners have painted and mounted in the front yard.
