Chuck Gardner has an excellent series of short, easy to understand tutorials about lighting and other concepts related to portrait photography.  There are several gems in this set of tutorials, and I recommend that you browse through and read the ones you find interesting.  This series of tutorials provides a basic understanding of portrait lighting concepts that will get you well on your way to becoming a more proficient and confident portrait photographer.  Happy reading!
